Personal Statement: |
I was in the United States Navy for 14 years. Over the years I have developed many skills, customer service, service management, and cooking to name a few. I have also experienced many different personalities. One skill in particular that I became rather fond of was Guest Service. I enjoy working with people. I began to understand how better to serve individuals in a professional manner. I know that there are other levels and plateaus to cross in this profession and I expect to go as far as I can. Most of my career I came to realize that such duties in the military were not looked upon as being professional enough. Personal Quarter Duty job was looked at as just someone cleaning toilets and ironing the Admiral’s or General’s clothing. Since I have been part of the Secretary of the Navy’s staff I have come to understand that it’s not just any job it is a profession. I would like to master this profession. I was born on the Island of St. Michael, Barbados. I have three sons and a beautiful wife of whom I have practically known all my life. I came to the states in 1972 and was raised in Hartford, CT. I remained there until I joined the Navy in 1985. I have always been someone who believes in family values and principles. I believe that a family is a bond that was put together by God. Picture, if you will, a chain with many links that no one can separate. I have been raised and lived by these values and principles all of my life. I have been in the service for fifteen years and I have learned how to serve all people. I have also learned the basics of serving, very good management skills (treat individuals as they would want to be treated), and I am experienced in the operation and maintenance of foodservice at many levels. I have knowledge of fire safety and prevention. I have been in positions where a lot of pressure and stress was present. I found that to be very invigorating. I also learned the art of Networking to get resources that may come in handy at times. Mentoring is also very important in a work place. I presently work for the Secretary of the Navy, Chief of Naval Operations, Commandant of the Marines and VIPs. My top three Service Standards include; Culinary: cooking gourmet dishes, planning formal meals and functions and the ordering of food. Entertaining: I have been completely responsible for many formal dinners and international events. Administrative: I have managed barracks (berthing) in the military. I consider myself a very flexible person. I have the gifts of compassion, flexibility, and sensitivity. This makes me want to please whom ever I meet be it my supervisors, a family member or a stranger. Sometimes it seems that my only priority in life is to see every human share that wonderful gift we all have, the gift of a SMILE! This is how I know I am right for service. |
